The philosophical ideas of Mencius/Mengzi provide a unique perspective on the discourses concerning the nature of human beings. He claims that humans have innate but incipient inclinations to benevolence, righteousness, wisdom, and proprietary, all of which are virtues heavily emphasized in Confucian philosophy. Through the use of Mencius/Mengzi’s “analogical reasoning,” as the scholars have called it, we can see his unique take on human nature as good in potentiality. Arguably, Mencius’ unique political and moral philosophy sets him apart from other Confucian thinkers and even Confucius himself.
The webinar will focus on Mencius/Mengzi’s position on human nature. Through the use of thought-experiments and actively engaging with the relevant texts, this presentation will take us through a step-by-step process in understanding the philosophical thoughts of Mencius. This webinar requires no prior knowledge about ancient Chinese philosophy, as we are all here to learn about the eastern perspective together!
Raymarck Unera (He/Him) is a third-year student at Grant MacEwan University, majoring in Philosophy and minoring in Business Law. Having an Asian background himself, he has made it an interest of his not only to dwell in Western philosophy contents but also to keep in touch with the philosophical ideas closer to his home country, the Philippines.
His philosophical interests include learning more about the works of feminist philosophers, and with that being said, he hopes to learn more about feminist philosophers of Eastern backgrounds. Apart from academics, Raymarck’s interests include casually learning another language’s alphabet, dance workshops, cooking, and sound-bowl healing. When he is not at his desk reading about academics, Raymarck makes sure his interests outside the classroom reflect his passion for maintaining his eastern perspective and identity. These can be cooking foods from neighbouring cultures of the Philippines or meditating with Tibetan singing bowls.
Registration to our webinars is free. However, we strongly encourage donations so that we can keep on fulfilling our mission of promoting culture, arts and humanities!
